SEO Content Writer

An SEO content writer produces articles, guides and pages that answer what people search for, written to rank in search engines and to be worth reading once they do.

What does an SEO content writer do?

An SEO content writer writes for two readers at once: the person typing a question into a search engine and the search engine deciding which page answers it. They take a keyword brief, work out the intent behind the search, study what already ranks and write a page that answers the question better: clearer, more complete, more useful and more honest. Along the way they handle the mechanics, headings, title tags, meta descriptions, internal links and structure, that help a page be understood and found.

The role sits between the SEO specialist, who decides which pages should exist and for which searches, and the editor or brand lead, who protects the voice. A good SEO writer can hold both: the page ranks and it still sounds like the brand.

Why it matters

Why an SEO content writer matters

Search is the largest audience most brands have that they do not pay for. Every day people search for the things a brand makes, the problems it solves and the words it uses, and the pages that answer those searches are read for years. An SEO writer builds that library. Done well, it brings in people with intent, who arrived because they wanted something the brand has. Done badly, it fills the site with pages that rank for nothing and say less, which search engines now notice and the brand's readers always did.

In practice

How an SEO content writer works in practice

  1. 01

The brief arrives with a target search, the intent behind it, the related terms a complete answer should cover and the pages that currently rank. The writer reads those pages, finds what they miss and plans a structure that answers the question in the first paragraph and the follow-up questions in the headings, so a reader who scans gets the answer and a reader who stays gets the depth.

  2. 02

Then the writing, in the brand's voice, with the search terms used where a person would use them and nowhere else. The page gets a title and a description written to be clicked, links to and from related pages, and a FAQ where people actually ask follow-ups. After publishing, the writer and the SEO specialist watch how it ranks and revise it, because a search page is maintained, not launched.

This glossary is the job in practice. Every term is a search someone makes, and every entry is written to answer it properly, in our voice, with the related terms linked and the questions people actually ask answered at the end. It is also written from inside a studio that does the work it describes, which is the part no amount of keyword research can supply.

Watch out

What people get wrong about SEO content writers

Writing for the engine. Pages stuffed with the keyword, padded to a word count and shaped like every other page in the results rank worse each year and convert nobody. The other mistake is the opposite: hiring a fine writer and ignoring search entirely, so the best article on the subject is read by the people who already knew to look. The job is both, and it is harder than either.

Questions

People also ask

What is the difference between an SEO content writer and a copywriter?

The SEO writer writes pages that answer a search and earn a reader; the copywriter writes lines that sell an idea. One is measured in rankings and reads, the other in response. Many writers do both, but the briefs, the lengths and the measure of success differ.

How long should SEO content be?

As long as the answer. A question with a two-sentence answer should get two sentences and a page that earns the click with its clarity. A guide to a complex subject can run thousands of words. Word count targets produce padding, and padding is what search engines are getting better at ignoring.

Can AI write SEO content?

It can draft it, and a lot of the web is now that draft. Pages that rank and get read have a point of view, first-hand knowledge and a voice, which is the part a writer adds. Use the tools for research and structure, then make the page say something only you could say.
