What is a post-production service?
Post-production is everything that happens to a film after the shoot. The term covers the edit, where the story is assembled from the footage; the color grade, where the picture is matched and given its look; the sound, from dialogue cleanup to the final mix; visual effects and compositing, where anything that could not be captured is added or removed; motion graphics and titles; and the finishing and delivery, where the film is exported to the specifications of every place it will play. A post-production service is any of those, offered by a studio or a specialist facility.
Some post houses do everything under one roof. Others specialize in one craft, such as color or sound, and a producer assembles the chain. In a creative agency and production studio like RIOT the post team sits beside the people who wrote and shot the film, which keeps the idea intact from the first cut to the master.
Why it matters
Why post-production services matter
A shoot captures raw material; post is where the film is made. The same footage can become a tight sixty-second spot or a meandering three minutes, a warm story or a cold one, depending on what happens in the edit, the grade and the mix. The decisions made in post are as creative as the ones made on set, and they are made with more time and less pressure.
Post is also where the deliverables multiply. A campaign that once needed one master now needs a dozen: lengths, aspect ratios, languages, subtitles, platform specifications. Post-production is where that multiplication is handled without the film losing its quality on the way.
In practice
How a post-production service works in practice
- 01
It begins with the footage. Media is ingested, backed up, organized and synced with sound, and the editor builds an assembly, then a rough cut, then a fine cut, with the client reviewing at each stage. Once the picture is locked, the rest of post runs in parallel: the colorist grades, the sound team edits and mixes, the graphics team builds titles and animations, and visual effects shots are completed and returned to the timeline.
- 02
Finishing brings it together. The graded picture, the mix and the graphics are conformed into one master, checked frame by frame for technical faults, and exported in every format on the delivery list. A good post producer keeps the whole chain on schedule and makes sure nothing leaves without being checked.

Sizzle reels are post-production work by definition, cut from existing footage into something with a new energy, and we have made them for Coach for more than a decade and for Clinique besides. Our Cannes Lions 2026 recap film for Coach was the same discipline at speed. You can see the form at riot.nyc/portcat/sizzle-reels.
Watch out
What people get wrong about post-production services
Treating post as cleanup. The edit is not where mistakes get fixed; it is where the film gets made, and a project that budgets post as an afterthought ends up with a shoot full of material and no time to use it well. The other mistake is changing the cut after lock. Every stage after the edit depends on the picture staying still, and a late change ripples through the grade, the sound and the graphics at a cost nobody budgeted.
