e.l.f. Mirror Mix

Mirror Mix landed on 24 September, the second original album from e.l.f. Made, the brand’s entertainment arm. Seven rising artists across pop, R&B, Latin and rock, seven original tracks, written and recorded in a three day camp executive produced by Michelle Bell of Geo Massive. Joaquina opens Mirror Mix with “Ya No Estoy”. Flau’jae Johnson brought “What Can’t I Do”, NEZZA “Bésame”, Brasko “Look Don’t Touch” and Mamii “Transitions”. Hello Sister, the Orlando sister trio, made “Girlhood Is Forever”, and Sadie Rose Van closes Mirror Mix with “Kiss”.

Our friends at Day One Agency built the world it lives in, and asked us to take that world and extend it into video, so we leaned into Y2K throwback vibes hard. A CRT parked in a clear desktop wallpaper inspired sky. Dialog windows, flip phones, the blue screen of death, a CD-ROM tray in a pink hued room, a blizzard of cursors. If it lived on a desktop in 2000, it probably turns up somewhere in these fifty seconds.

It opens on e.l.f. itself. An eye, a pair of lips, a smiley, arriving one at a time on pixel blue, and only when the camera pulls back do you realise you have been staring at a monitor. It reads e.l.f. MADE, the film pushes in, and the disc magically morphs out of the CRT.

What follows is an operating system having a very good time. Two flip phones with e.l.f. MADE on their little screens flank NEZZA’s “Bésame” before the whole thing crashes into the blue screen of death. Dialog windows open onto each artist and their track. Mamii’s name gets spelled out in e.l.f. lipstick packaging on a counter. A CD-ROM tray glides out into a pink hued room and gleefully swallows the disc. Hello Sister tiles across a grid of windows until one flips to a smiley and the whole thing becomes a pixelated wall of them, before the album artwork fans open to reveal seven covers over a melting pink smiley background. Mirror Mix windows cascade across a DJ session, “GET E.L.F.ING READY!” multiplies into a dialog storm before a blizzard of cursors takes the screen, and a prism blows the whole thing open into the logo.

e.l.f. calls this a compilation album, so we ran it like one, with a voiceover pitched at the late night TV spot every compilation used to get: the announcer talking over a track list, promising every song you love on one disc. That cadence does the heavy lifting. It turns seven names into an event and lets lines like “the ultimate beauty slaylist” and “full of fresh beats” land. The comments clocked it instantly: “love the early 2000s infomercial vibe, and the diversity of the featured artists”. Another just said, “I wish it was a cd”.

The look is built, not filtered. Every window, disc, cursor and dialog box was animated so the artists’ footage sits inside the world instead of on top of it. The cover carousel is a rig rather than a preset: one control drives card size, corner radius and spacing, which is how seven covers replaced six mid-project without rebuilding the move. And then there is the cube, a block of 3D glass with e.l.f. MADE suspended inside it, turning slowly, rainbow refraction running down its edges, picking up whatever sits behind it. It holds the corner of almost every shot, because the note that came back on V1 was to put that spinning e.l.f. MADE glass cube everywhere.

It shipped in six formats, 1920×1080 down to 480×360, landscape, square and vertical, each with textless versions and a stream now end card. It passed a million views in its first five days across YouTube and Instagram alone, before counting Facebook or TikTok.
