Post-Production Suites

Post-production suites are the purpose-built rooms where films are edited, graded, mixed and finished, each equipped and calibrated for the craft that happens in it.

What is a post-production suite?

A post-production suite is a room designed for one stage of finishing a film. An edit suite has a workstation, fast storage, a client monitor and a comfortable place for a director to sit for a week. A color suite is dark, with controlled lighting and a calibrated reference monitor, so the colorist sees the image as it truly is. A mix suite is acoustically treated, with monitoring matched to the destination, so the sound heard in the room is the sound the audience will hear. A graphics suite is built for rendering and design. Together they make up a post facility.

The suite matters because the environment affects the judgment. A grade made in a bright room is wrong in a dark one; a mix made in an untreated office sounds different everywhere else. The room is part of the instrument.

Why it matters

Why post-production suites matter

Craft needs conditions. The decisions made in post are decisions about the image and the sound, and they can only be made correctly where the image and the sound are reproduced correctly. A calibrated monitor in a controlled room is the only way to know that the skin tones are right; treated acoustics and reference speakers are the only way to know that the dialogue sits where it should.

Suites also shape the relationship with the client. A review in a proper room, on a big calibrated screen with the sound in place, lets a brand see the film as its audience will, and the approvals that follow are reliable. Reviews on laptops over email produce notes about problems that do not exist and miss the ones that do.

In practice

How a post-production suite works in practice

  1. 01

Each suite is built around its craft. The edit suite is connected to shared storage so the editor, the assistant and the graphics designer work on the same media without copying it. The color suite is calibrated regularly against a reference standard and kept dark. The mix suite is measured and tuned, with the monitoring switchable between stereo, surround and a small speaker that stands in for a phone.

  2. 02

A film moves between the rooms as it moves through post. The locked edit goes to color and to sound in parallel, the graphics come back to the edit, and the finished elements are conformed and checked in a finishing suite before delivery. Suites are booked by the day or the week, and a post producer schedules the rooms so nothing waits on anything else.

Watch out

What people get wrong about post-production suites

Assuming any computer with the software is a suite. The software is the smallest part; the calibration, the acoustics, the storage and the quiet are what make the work reliable. A grade on an uncalibrated laptop is a guess. The other mistake is skipping the review in the room. Approving a film from a compressed link on a phone is how brands end up surprised by a color shift or a mix that sounds nothing like the preview when the spot finally airs.

Questions

People also ask

What types of post-production suite are there?

Edit suites, color grading suites, sound editing and mixing suites, voiceover and ADR booths, graphics and visual effects suites, and finishing or mastering suites. Smaller facilities combine several functions in one room; larger ones keep them separate.

Can post-production be done remotely?

Much of the editing can, with shared storage in the cloud and review links for approvals. Color and mixing are harder to do remotely because they depend on calibrated monitors and treated rooms, so the final passes usually happen in a suite even when the rough work happened elsewhere.

How much does it cost to book a post-production suite?

Rates depend on the room and whether an artist is included. An edit suite with an editor is a daily rate; a color suite with a senior colorist or a mix suite with an engineer is higher. Most brand projects book post as a package rather than by the room.
