Social Videos

Social videos are short films made for social media feeds, built to be watched on a phone, often without sound, and to earn attention in the first second.

What is a social video?

A social video is a film designed for the way people watch on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, LinkedIn, X and the rest. Usually vertical, usually short (from six seconds to a couple of minutes), captioned for silent viewing and edited to hook immediately. It might be a product film, a behind the scenes clip, a cut-down of a campaign, an interview, a tutorial or a piece of pure entertainment.

The key difference from other video is the context. A social video is not watched in a cinema or on a television someone chose to switch on. It interrupts a scroll, alongside friends' posts and creators' videos, and it has to earn its place there. Many brands now make more social video than any other kind of film, which has changed how productions are planned, shot and budgeted.

Why it matters

Why a social video matters

Video is the format platforms push hardest, and for most brands it is now the main way new people meet them online. Recommendation feeds show short video to people who do not follow the account, which makes a strong social video one of the few remaining ways to reach large audiences without paying for every view.

It also carries more than an image can: movement, sound, personality, a product in use. A ten second film of a bag being packed, a lamp being switched on or an instructor calling a cue tells you more than a still ever could.

In practice

How a social video works in practice

  1. 01

The best social videos are planned, not salvaged. Formats, hooks and aspect ratios are decided before the shoot, so the crew captures vertical framing, close details and moments built for the first second, rather than cropping a horizontal film after the fact. On campaign shoots, a dedicated social unit or a second camera often runs alongside the main production for exactly this reason.

  2. 02

In the edit, each platform gets its own version: different lengths, different openings, burned-in captions, text placed clear of the platform's buttons, music cleared for use. The films are published, measured on watch time, completion, shares and saves, and the learning feeds the next batch. A strong social program is a loop of making, posting and learning, not a one-off delivery.

Watch out

What people get wrong about social videos

Cutting down the commercial and calling it social. A thirty second spot trimmed to fifteen still opens with a slow brand build, still assumes sound and still frames for a horizontal screen. On a feed it gets skipped.

The other mistake is over-polishing. Social audiences are comfortable with a rougher, more direct style, and highly produced films can read as ads and be scrolled past faster. The craft is in the idea, the hook and the edit, not necessarily in the gloss.

Questions

People also ask

How long should a social video be?

As short as the idea allows. Many perform best between six and thirty seconds, though longer videos work when they hold attention, especially on YouTube and for tutorials or stories. Watch time and completion rate will tell you what your audience tolerates.

What aspect ratio should social videos be?

Vertical 9:16 is the standard for reels, TikTok, Shorts and stories. Four by five works well in feeds, and 16:9 remains right for standard YouTube. Plan the framing at the shoot so every version looks intentional.

Do social videos need captions?

Yes. A large share of social video is watched with the sound off, and captions also make videos accessible to deaf and hard of hearing viewers. Burned-in captions or on-screen text should be designed as part of the edit, not added as an afterthought.
