What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is the product that made generative AI a household word. OpenAI released it in November 2022 as a chat window in front of a large language model, and the format stuck: you type a request in ordinary language and it replies in fluent prose, code or tables, and in newer versions with images and voice. Under the hood it predicts the most likely continuation of the conversation, based on patterns learned from a vast amount of text.
The name has drifted into a generic term, the way people say "Google it." When someone in a meeting says "ask ChatGPT," they often mean any AI assistant, whether it is OpenAI's or a competitor such as Google's Gemini.
Why it matters
Why ChatGPT matters
It changed the starting point of almost every writing task. Research summaries, interview questions, first drafts, subject lines, social captions, translations: all of them can now begin with a draft in seconds instead of a blank page. For agencies that collapses the cost of the routine work and puts the weight on what happens after the draft, which is choosing, cutting and making it true.
It also changed how people look for information. Many now ask an assistant before they search, and the assistant's answer may be the only description of a brand they read. What a model says about you is becoming part of your reputation.
In practice
How ChatGPT works in practice
- 01
Used well, it is a fast collaborator with no taste of its own. A strategist pastes in a brief and asks for the ten questions a skeptical client would raise. A writer asks for fifty headline variations and keeps two. A producer turns a messy call transcript into a clean list of actions. The quality of the output depends almost entirely on the quality of the input: context, examples, constraints and a clear ask.
- 02
Every output gets checked. ChatGPT can state wrong facts in the same confident tone as right ones, invent sources and lose track of details in a long conversation. Teams that use it seriously set rules about what may be pasted in (nothing confidential on an account whose data settings nobody has checked) and what must be verified before it leaves the building.
Watch out
What people get wrong about ChatGPT
Treating it as a search engine. It is a language model, and while newer versions can browse the web, its default is to produce a plausible answer, not a sourced one. The other mistake we see is mistaking fluency for quality. A paragraph that reads smoothly can still say nothing, and the house style of an unedited AI draft is becoming easy for readers to recognize.
A third mistake is using it alone. ChatGPT is most useful as a sparring partner inside a team's process, not as a replacement for the conversation. A strategist who asks it for counterarguments and then argues back gets sharper thinking; one who accepts its first framing gets the same framing as every other team that asked the same question.
