What is Bing Webmaster Tools?
It is Bing's equivalent of Google Search Console: a place to verify that you own a site, submit sitemaps, see which queries bring people to you, check for crawl errors and ask for pages to be indexed. Because Bing also powers Yahoo, DuckDuckGo's results and the search inside Microsoft's own products, the tools cover more of the market than the Bing brand suggests. Since 2023 they have also been the closest thing to a window on how Microsoft's AI-driven search, Copilot, reads a site.
Verification takes minutes, and the tools can import sites directly from Google Search Console, so there is no excuse for leaving it empty. For an agency site, where a single lead from a corporate network can be worth a year of work, the second engine is worth the half hour.
Why it matters
Why Bing Webmaster Tools matters
Bing is a minority of search but not a rounding error, and in some audiences it is a surprisingly large share: desktop users on Windows machines, older demographics, corporate networks where Edge is the default browser. A brand that ignores it is ignoring real customers because they are harder to count.
The tools also surface things Google's do not. Bing's SEO reports flag on-page issues plainly, its keyword research tool is free and draws on its own data, and its index coverage view often catches crawl problems from a second angle. Two search engines looking at the same site find more than one.
In practice
How Bing Webmaster Tools works in practice
- 01
Verify the site, submit the XML sitemap, and connect it to the same person who watches Search Console. Then use the three reports that matter: Search Performance (queries, clicks, impressions), Site Explorer (what Bing has indexed, page by page) and the SEO reports that list missing titles, slow pages and broken links. IndexNow, Bing's protocol for pinging the engine when a URL changes, is available through most CMS plugins and gets new pages indexed in minutes rather than days.
- 02
Check it at the same cadence as Search Console. A monthly look is enough for most brand sites, with a closer eye after a migration or a redesign, when crawl errors spike and the URL Inspection tool shows exactly what Bing sees on a page.
Watch out
What people get wrong about Bing Webmaster Tools
Not setting it up. Most sites have Search Console and nothing else, which means a search engine serving a meaningful share of their audience is a blind spot. The second mistake is assuming Bing ranks the same way as Google: it weighs social signals and exact-match domains differently, it likes clear keywords in titles, and the SEO reports are the quickest way to see where the two diverge.
Using it only when something breaks. The performance data is a second, independent reading of what people search for to find you, and that is useful every month, not only in a crisis.
