Fashion Photography

Fashion photography is photography of clothing and accessories made to sell a mood as much as a garment, in campaigns, editorials, lookbooks and e-commerce.

What is fashion photography?

Fashion photography is photography made to make clothes and accessories desirable. It sells the garment, but it sells the world around it more: the attitude, the light, the place, the kind of person who wears it. The genre spans campaigns, magazine editorials, lookbooks, e-commerce and the runway, and each asks for something different. A campaign image builds a brand's mythology; an e-commerce image shows exactly how a seam falls.

It is also one of the most collaborative forms of photography. The photographer works with a stylist, hair and makeup artists, a set designer, a casting director and an art director, and the image is the sum of all of them. Behind them sit producers, assistants, digital technicians and retouchers, and on a campaign day the crew can easily outnumber the cast.

Why it matters

Why fashion photography matters

In fashion, the image often reaches people before the product does. Most customers meet a collection on a screen, so the photography is the first fitting room, the store window and the brand statement all at once. A strong image can define a season, or a house, for years. A weak one makes good clothes look ordinary.

Beyond luxury houses and labels, the language of fashion photography now shapes how every lifestyle brand presents itself, from eyewear to sneakers to beauty. That is why so many campaigns, whatever they sell, borrow its casting, its locations and its light.

In practice

How fashion photography works in practice

  1. 01

A shoot begins with a concept and a mood board: the story, the references, the casting, the location or set, the light. The team is assembled around it, the looks are chosen and fitted, and a shot list sets which garments appear in which frames for which uses. Campaign and e-commerce needs are often planned together so one shoot day serves both, with separate setups for each. Fittings before the day save hours on it.

  2. 02

On the day, the photographer and the art director direct the model and the light while the stylist adjusts every fold. Images are selected with the creative team, retouched to the brand's standard, with colors matched exactly to the real fabric, and delivered in every crop the campaign needs, from billboard to product page.

At RIOT

We shoot campaign photography beside our films, so the stills and the motion come from the same world. That has meant photography for Coach, whom we have worked with for more than a decade, and for Tiffany & Co., Cartier, Sunglass Hut and ShopBazaar, made alongside the films and carrying the same casting, styling and light.

Watch out

What people get wrong about fashion photography

Forgetting the product. An image can be beautiful and still fail if the customer cannot see the cut, the color or the detail they are paying for. The other mistake is chasing someone else's aesthetic. Every brand has the same references on its mood board; the work that lasts looks like the brand, not the mood board. A third is retouching the texture out of the clothes. Fabric that looks like plastic sells nothing.

Questions

People also ask

What is the difference between fashion photography and product photography?

Product photography shows an item clearly, often on a plain background, so a customer knows exactly what they are buying. Fashion photography shows the item in a world, on a person, with a mood. Most brands need both, and they are often shot on the same day.

Who is on a fashion photography team?

Typically a photographer, an art director or creative director, a stylist, hair and makeup artists, models, a set designer for studio work, a producer and, after the shoot, a retoucher. Larger campaigns add a casting director and a location team.

How long does a fashion shoot take to plan?

A simple e-commerce day can be organized in a week or two. A campaign with casting, locations and custom sets usually needs four to eight weeks of preproduction, and sample availability is often the deciding factor.
