What is a digital agency?
A digital agency specializes in the channels that live on a screen. Its work includes websites, apps, e-commerce, search, social, email, paid digital media, analytics and the content that feeds all of them. The label dates from the years when "digital" was a department separate from the rest of marketing; it has survived into a time when almost all marketing is digital, which makes the term broader and vaguer than it used to be.
Today a digital agency might be a web development shop, a performance marketing firm, a social content studio or all three. The common thread is fluency in platforms, data and the technical side of getting work in front of people online.
Why it matters
Why a digital agency matters
Most of a brand's contact with its audience now happens on a screen, and the platforms change faster than most marketing teams can follow. A digital agency keeps up for a living: what formats a platform favors this quarter, how search is shifting, what a site needs to load fast on a phone. That knowledge decides whether good creative is seen or buried.
It also closes the loop. Digital channels produce data, and an agency that reads it well can tell a brand what actually worked, which is a privilege traditional media rarely offered.
In practice
How a digital agency works in practice
- 01
The engagement is usually ongoing rather than project-based. The agency audits the brand's digital presence, sets a strategy for the channels that matter and builds or fixes the foundations: the site, the tracking, the accounts. Then it runs the program: content, campaigns, search, paid media, email, with reporting on a regular cycle.
- 02
Creative is produced for each platform's rules. A film is cut for vertical and square, a landing page is built for the ad that points to it, a post is written for the algorithm that will rank it. The best digital agencies keep craft in that process, so the platform versions are still recognizably the brand.
At RIOT
Digital agencies at RIOT
We are a creative agency and production studio rather than a digital agency, but the work lives online as much as anyone's. The Meta ad engine we built and ran for Homebase from February to April 2025 was digital marketing done at production pace, and our own products, Krova, AltSounds and Muvvoo, are built and run by the same team that makes the films.
Watch out
What people get wrong about digital agencies
Hiring one for everything. A digital agency that is excellent at performance media may be weak at brand and film, and a web shop may have no idea how to make a campaign. Ask what the agency actually makes. The other mistake is measuring only what is easy to measure; clicks are visible and brand is not, and a program optimized for clicks alone tends to starve the thing that makes people click.
A third mistake is letting the platform set the standard. Native formats and fast turnarounds are real constraints, but they are not an excuse for work that looks disposable. The brands that win online still look like brands.
