What is a zero-click search?
A zero-click search is a query that Google answers itself. Search for the weather, a conversion, a definition, a celebrity's age, the opening hours of a store or the capital of a country and the answer sits at the top of the page in a box. The searcher reads it and leaves. No website was visited, though one of them very likely supplied the answer. Featured snippets, knowledge panels, People Also Ask boxes, the local pack, direct answers and now AI overviews are all mechanisms that produce zero-click outcomes.
Studies over the years have put the share of zero-click searches anywhere from a quarter to well over half of all queries, depending on the method and the device, and the share has grown as the results page has absorbed more kinds of answer.
Why it matters
Why zero-click searches matter
They change what ranking is worth. A page can rank first for a query and receive few visits, because the answer was lifted into a snippet above it and most people stopped there. That is a loss for sites that depend on the click and a gain for brands that benefit from being the source: the snippet carries the site's name, the knowledge panel shows the brand's facts, the local pack shows its address and reviews. Visibility without a visit is still visibility, and for a brand query it is often the whole point.
They also change strategy. Queries that are mostly zero-click are poor targets for traffic and good targets for presence; the content plan has to know which is which.
In practice
How zero-click searches work in practice
- 01
The first step is to see them. Rank tracking tools report which results features appear for each query, and Search Console shows impressions rising while clicks stay flat, which is the zero-click signature. Queries are sorted: those where a click still happens (anything complex, commercial or personal) and those where the page answers in place.
- 02
For the second group the aim is to be the answer. Content is written with the question stated plainly and answered in the first paragraph, in the form a snippet can lift: a definition sentence, a short list, a table. Structured data marks up FAQs, products, events and the organization so that panels and rich results draw on the site. The business profile is kept complete so the local pack is right. And the content below the answer gives the searcher a reason to continue, for the share who do.

Zero-click searches at RIOT
Every entry in this glossary opens with one plain sentence that defines the term, and every entry carries its questions as structured data. That is zero-click design: if a searcher only ever reads the definition in a snippet and learns that it came from us, the page has done part of its job. The rest of the page is there for the people who want more than a sentence.
Watch out
What people get wrong about zero-click searches
Treating them as theft. A snippet that quotes your site is the most prominent position on the page, and for brand and local queries the zero-click result is the result you want. The other mistake is chasing traffic from queries that no longer produce it: writing a thousand words to rank for "what time is it in Tokyo" is a thousand words wasted. Match the effort to the share of searchers who will actually arrive.
