Digital KPIs

Digital KPIs are the handful of online metrics a brand chooses to judge whether its marketing is working, such as traffic, conversions, cost per acquisition and engagement.

What is a digital KPI?

A digital KPI is a key performance indicator for online activity: a number chosen in advance to say whether a campaign, a channel or a site is doing its job. The platforms report hundreds of metrics. A KPI is the one you have decided matters, with a target attached. Site traffic, conversion rate, cost per acquisition, return on ad spend, email open rate, video completion rate and follower growth are all metrics; which of them are KPIs depends on what the work is for.

The distinction is the whole point. A metric is something you can measure. A KPI is something you have agreed to be judged by.

Why it matters

Why digital KPIs matter

Because without them every campaign is a success. There is always a number that went up, and a report built after the fact will find it. Agreeing the KPI before launch forces the honest conversation: what is this for, and what would failure look like? That makes the review useful and the next brief sharper.

KPIs also direct the work. A team optimizing for video views makes different creative than a team optimizing for purchases, and both are right if the KPI was chosen on purpose. Choose it badly and the team will faithfully deliver the wrong thing: a campaign tuned for cheap clicks that finds cheap clicks and sells nothing.

In practice

How digital KPIs work in practice

  1. 01

Start from the business objective and work down. A launch that needs to sell through inventory has a revenue or acquisition KPI; a rebrand has awareness and sentiment KPIs; a content program has engagement and return visits. Pick one primary KPI per campaign and two or three supporting ones that explain it (click-through rate and landing page conversion explain cost per acquisition, for instance). Set a target against your own history, not a published average.

  2. 02

Then instrument it. Tracking has to be in place before launch: pixels, conversion events, tagged links, a dashboard someone actually opens. During the campaign the KPI is read weekly and the supporting metrics are used to diagnose, not to celebrate. After it, the KPI is reported against the target, and the shortfall or the surplus becomes the lesson for the next brief.

At RIOT

When we ran the Meta ad engine for Homebase from February to April 2025, creative was tested and iterated against performance, which only works when everyone agrees what performance means before the first ad goes live. The KPI was the brief for every new version. The same discipline is why a number like the roughly five million views on the e.l.f. Mirror Mix launch film is worth quoting: it was the kind of result the film was built for.

Watch out

What people get wrong about digital KPIs

Choosing too many. A dashboard with twenty KPIs has none; it is a metrics page with a grander name. The other mistake is choosing the number that is easiest to move rather than the one that matters. Impressions, followers and views are real, but they are rarely the goal, and a campaign that reports them as if they were is hiding something. Pick the number that would make the finance director nod.

Questions

People also ask

What are the most common digital KPIs?

Website traffic, conversion rate, cost per acquisition, return on ad spend, click-through rate, email open and click rates, video completion rate and engagement rate. Which ones matter depends on the objective; a launch and a brand campaign should not share a KPI.

How many KPIs should a campaign have?

One primary KPI tied to the business goal, plus two or three supporting metrics that explain it. More than that and the team cannot tell what it is optimizing for.

What is the difference between a KPI and a metric?

A metric is anything you can measure. A KPI is a metric you have chosen in advance, with a target, to judge whether the work succeeded. Every KPI is a metric; almost no metric deserves to be a KPI.
