What is 10x content?
10x content is the page that makes the current number one result look thin. The phrase came out of the SEO world as a reaction to "me too" content: ten articles saying the same five things in a different order. The idea is simple and demanding. Before you publish on a subject, read everything already ranking for it, then make something that is not a little better but an order of magnitude better: deeper, clearer, better designed, faster to use, and more honest about what the reader actually needs.
It is not a format. 10x content can be a long guide, a tool, a short page that answers the question in three lines where everyone else takes two thousand words, or a film. The multiplier is measured in usefulness, not length.
Why it matters
Why 10x content matters
Search engines reward the page that satisfies the searcher, and readers reward the page that respects their time. Both are now good at spotting filler. A brand that publishes adequate content competes with every other brand publishing adequate content, which is most of them, and the result is a page nobody links to, shares or remembers. A brand that publishes the definitive page on a subject gets the links, the citations and the second visit, and it keeps getting them for years.
There is a creative reason too. Setting the bar at ten times forces a team to ask what the best possible answer would look like, and that question produces better ideas than "what should we post this week."
In practice
How 10x content works in practice
- 01
Start with the search, not the subject. Pull the top ten results for the query and write down what each one does well and where it stops short: missing steps, no examples, no visuals, stale data, a wall of text with no way in. The gaps are the brief. Then decide what form the best answer takes. Sometimes it is a longer guide; often it is a shorter one with a diagram, a calculator, a video or a worked example that nobody else bothered to make.
- 02
Then make it properly. Design it so it reads on a phone, write it in a voice a person would use, cite real sources, and give it a title that says what it is. Publish, watch how people use it, and revise. 10x content is rarely finished on the first pass; it becomes the best page because someone keeps making it the best page.
At RIOT
10x content at RIOT
This glossary is our own attempt at it. The entries started life as one-line definitions, the kind every agency site has, and we are rewriting each one as a proper explanation in our own voice: what the term means, why it matters, how the work is actually done and what people get wrong. We would rather have fewer pages that are genuinely worth reading than a thousand that say nothing.
Watch out
What people get wrong about 10x content
Confusing ten times better with ten times longer. A 6,000-word article that buries the answer is worse than a 600-word one that puts it first. The other mistake is treating it as a publishing target: nobody can make 10x content three times a week. Pick the subjects that matter to your brand, make the definitive page on each, and let the rest go.
