Jenny Gaither walks into class without a plan.
Most instructors come in with one, she says. She’d rather fly by the seat of her pants, see what the room gives her, and be surprised by how it turns out. To her, SoulCycle is a form of artistic expression: a dance party some days, therapy some days, and just a complete outlet the rest. She learns as much from her riders as they do from her, and she shows up for them as much as they show up for her.

“I feel like
I’m Beyoncé in class.”
Fire. Internal fire. Hair fire.
In a dark room with the candles lit, when the playlist hits, she becomes someone else: a version of herself she doesn’t get to tap into day to day. What she wants from the room is fire. Internal fire. Hair fire.
She’s inspired by creators, and by people who are always trying to up the game. She needs positive energy around her. She can also make a Chewbacca noise, which came up.

From ground zero
Jenny has been down a really rough road, and she’s open about how it shapes her teaching. Because of what she’s been through, she understands where people are coming from when they walk in starting from zero, and she connects with them fast.
Alongside the films, we shot a portraiture loop of every instructor against a white backdrop, made to sit beside their name and story on their SoulCycle profile. This is Jenny’s.
Jenny
“I'm always a student.”
Jenny walks into class without a plan and lets the room decide where it goes. Some days it's a dance party, some days it's therapy, and every day she shows up for her riders the way they show up for her.
“Those moments where you decide
to rise up every time.
That’s living.”
Off the bike
We took her to Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn. She jumped off a monument, hid behind a tree, ran the streets and sat still on a bench for about four seconds.

Her message is about what lasts. Image will always change. Your heart, your resilience, your grit, your humour and your love are what should matter more. Saying it on camera got to her a little, and we kept that in the film.
Our Instructor Portrait Series
Jenny’s film is one of a whole series of instructor portraits we made for SoulCycle: Charlee, Karyn, Sue, Claire J., Sam Y, Sydney, Victoria, Emily T, Samantha Jade, James, Francis, Laurie, Melanie, Trammell, Mike Press and Souereya. Each one is a different person and a different ride, filmed the same honest way.
