Emily Turner is a master instructor in New York and has been with SoulCycle since December 2011.

Give her 45 minutes and she will use every single second of them. Her class is athletic: intervals, pushes against resistance, no wasted time. She’s a dancer before she’s anything else, so for her the music and the movement can’t be pulled apart. They’re kind of one and the same.

A place to feel like me

SoulCycle was a huge part of her pregnancy. When you’re pregnant, she says, your body is not your own at all, and the bike was the place she still got to feel like herself. It’s never just exercise for her. There’s always something deeper than the workout.

Keep raising the bar

Her dad’s advice has stuck: keep raising the bar. Be a good person, work hard, dream big, and then actually go and do it. We spent the day on a Manhattan rooftop with Emily and her family, and her son took a few steps for the camera.
