This anthem encapsulated the spirit of exclusivity with the famous line, “Your name’s not down, you’re not coming in,” sparking the ideaAn idea is a thought, concept, or mental image that emerges as a solution, inspiration, or innovation. We asked ourselves: What if we could channel that same energy into a campaign where a bouncer—cool, calm, and unshakable—filters out unwanted calls, spam, and robocalls just like GetContact does? Thus, The Bouncer was born: a concept rooted in nostalgia, but built for today’s audiences, where the noise of spam calls is an ever-present part of life.
This Door Might Be Closed, But Creativity Never Stops Knocking
The Bouncer Campaign Breakdown
At its core, the campaign was designed to be simple but powerful. Picture an exclusive club with a velvet rope, and our no-nonsense bouncer standing guard. The guests? They’re unwanted spam calls, relentless robocalls, and spam messages, each represented by a person in a custom t-shirt emblazoned with iconic 555 numbers from classic Hollywood movies or tagged with “SCAM LIKELY.” The bouncer’s role? To keep the riff-raff out, only letting trusted contacts through.
After GetContact decided to pass on the idea, it opened up an even bigger opportunity for us. The Bouncer is perfectly suited for any brandA brand is the unique identity of a business, product, or service, encompassing its values, personality, visual identity, and customer perceptions. It’s how an organization differentiates itself and connects with its audience. in the spam-blocking space looking to make a powerful impression. Truecaller, Hiya, RoboKiller, and Nomorobo could all use this idea to showcase their platforms’ abilities to protect users from the daily annoyance of robocalls and unwanted messages. With episodic potential, each scene in The Bouncer could evolve into a series of adsAdvertising is the strategic process of promoting products, services, or ideas through paid channels to reach a target audience. Visual Style & Cultural Edge
To capture the contrast between the bouncer’s authority and the spam characters’ absurd attempts to get through, we used a three-shot format:
- Wide Two-Shot: This anchors the scene, showing the bouncer, the velvet rope, and the hopeful guest(s) in full view. It establishes the dynamic—the barrier between exclusivity and access denied, just like spam filtering keeps unwanted contacts out of your phone.
- Bouncer POV: Up close and personal, this shot lets viewersAn audience is a group of individuals who receive and engage with a specific message, content, or product. In marketing and creative fields, understanding the audience is critical to crafting resonant and impactful strategies and campaigns. step into the bouncer’s shoes, seeing the expressions and attitudes of each character that approaches. From the anxious 555-2368 (Ghostbusters) to the entitled “SCAM LIKELY” squad, the POV is a window into the absurdity of unwanted intrusions that spam-blocking apps like Truecaller and Hiya help eliminate.
- Over-the-Shoulder POV: A final shot from behind the guest, showing the bouncer’s unyielding stance. This is where the rejection lands, with the bouncer coolly delivering lines like “Not tonight, you’re not on the list,” emphasizing the control that RoboKiller and Nomorobo provide to their users.
The Bouncer taps into something cultural, referencing the gatekeeper dynamic that’s been part of nightlife (and life) forever. The addition of Kicks Like a Mule’s The Bouncer track would give the campaign a playful, nostalgic edge, one that would immediately resonate with viewers who remember the 90s rave scene—and for those too young, it adds a distinct air of cool.
At RIOT, we’re always looking to mix the old with the new. This concept was about blocking spam calls with style, humor, and a nod to where the inspiration came from—a 90s banger we’ve been spinning on repeat ever since. Just as spam-blocking apps filter out the noise in your digital life, our bouncer was there to do the same in the physical world.
The Missed Opportunity—Or the Next Big Thing?
Unfortunately, despite the creative potential, GetContact passed on the project.
But while this door may be closed for GetContact, The Bouncer concept is open for others ready to break into the spam-blocking space with something bold. We’re calling out GetContact’s competitors directly—Truecaller, Hiya, RoboKiller, and Nomorobo. If you’re looking to stand out, let’s take The Bouncer and make it together.
