Almost no one truly knows what the legendary Schlumberger sounded like, a private man he never publicly gave an interview and there are no known recordings of his voice.
The Voice Behind the Legend: Recreating Jean Schlumberger’s Essence at Tiffany & Co.
In collaboration with the Tiffany archives, we embarked on a captivating journey to unearth and recreate the Voice of Schlumberger for an exclusive installation at their newly renovated flagship Fifth Avenue store.
The challenge was immense; the mission was to simulate a voice without a reference point. Our extensive research took us through Schlumberger’s background, his upbringing, and any existing literature that might hint at his vocal tonality. Despite the hurdles, the intricacies of this endeavor were also what made it exhilarating.
Breathing Life into a Silent Legacy
A notable highlight of our creation process involved crafting a soundscape spanning three distinct zones, emanating from different speaker positions. This innovative design ensured that the phrases heard felt as if they were being whispered directly from Schlumberger’s consciousness, ensuring a profound connection between the visitor and the legend’s work.
Our commitment to recreating the maestro’s ambiance didn’t end at his voice. As visitors step out of the elevator on the eighth floor at Tiffany’s newly renovated flagship store, they’re instantly submerged into Schlumberger’s world. An underwater soundscape complements the display, reflecting the designer’s affinity for sea-inspired motifs, drawing visitors even deeper into the depths of his genius.

While we floated the innovative idea of transforming Schlumberger’s writings into a distinctive font, the concept remains on the horizon. It’s a testament to our dedication to this project and our future collaboration ambitions with Tiffany.
